Debt consolidation decision path
Debt consolidation 2026 begins with the existing debts, not an advertised floor. List every balance, APR, minimum payment, and payoff amount. Then compare a new offer using APR, fee, net proceeds, term, payment, and total repayment. Consolidation is useful only when the numbers and the post-payoff spending plan improve the debt.
Check whether the new rate is actually lower
The Federal Reserve’s July 8, 2026 G.19 release reports 11.86% APR for 24-month personal loans at commercial banks and 22.15% for credit card accounts assessed interest. Those are market references, not personal quotes. Use the 2026 debt consolidation rate guide to compare current lender disclosures, origination fees, net proceeds, and modeled total cost.
A lower payment alone is not enough. It may result from stretching repayment over more months. The new APR should be compared with the balance-weighted APR of the exact debts being replaced.
Prepare the approval file
Debt consolidation is underwritten as new credit. Lenders may verify identity, location, income, credit history, current debts, requested amount, and ability to repay. Direct-pay products can also require creditor account numbers and current payoff information.
Use the debt consolidation requirements checklist, then calculate payment capacity with the DTI check inside our loan calculator. There is no universal approval checklist or DTI cutoff.
Compare the main payoff paths
Fixed personal loan
One installment payment can simplify bills. Compare APR, fee, net proceeds, and total repayment with the current debts.
Balance transfer
A promotional rate may help if the balance can be cleared before it expires. Compare the transfer fee, promotion length, required payment, and post-promotion APR before moving a balance.
Direct payoff plan
If consolidation does not lower cost, use the credit-card payoff strategy guide to document an avalanche or snowball schedule without adding a new loan.
Nonprofit counseling
A nonprofit credit counselor may review a budget and discuss a debt management plan. Compare that structure with a loan in the debt management plan versus consolidation guide; it is different from debt settlement.
Choose the comparison that matches the decision
Loan vs. balance transfer
Compare the transfer fee, promotional deadline, post-promotion APR, loan fee, payment, and total cost.
Unsecured vs. home equity
Compare closing costs and rate differences without overlooking the foreclosure risk created by securing debt with a home.
Consolidation vs. settlement
Separate a new payoff loan from a program that may involve stopped payments, collection activity, tax consequences, and credit damage.
Run the fee and proceeds test
An origination fee may be deducted before funds are delivered. A $20,000 face amount with a 6% deducted fee provides only $18,800, which can leave creditors unpaid. The fee field in our loan calculator converts a percentage into fee dollars and net proceeds.
Confirm whether the lender pays creditors directly, whether a discount depends on direct pay, and how long posting may take. Our current lender reviews record provider-specific Direct Pay limits and creditor restrictions. Continue required payments until each creditor confirms receipt and any residual interest is cleared.
Debt consolidation cost checklist
- Record each current balance, APR, minimum payment, and payoff quote.
- Calculate the balance-weighted APR of the debts being replaced.
- Compare actual offered APRs, not advertised floors.
- Convert every fee into dollars and calculate net proceeds.
- Model the payment and total repayment using the exact term.
- Confirm whether the rate is fixed and whether discounts can be lost.
- Create a plan for old accounts and future card spending.

Track each creditor through payoff
Record the creditor, account identifier, current payoff amount, quote expiration date, payment destination, and expected posting time. After funding, verify receipt and any residual interest before stopping payments. A consolidation loan is not complete merely because the new lender says funds were sent.
Keep statements showing the old balances reached the intended amount. If proceeds are deposited to you instead of sent directly, separate the money from routine spending and complete the planned payoffs promptly.
When consolidation makes debt worse
The new loan can be harmful when its APR is near or above the old debts, the fee creates a payoff gap, or the longer term increases total cost more than the cash-flow benefit is worth. It also fails when the paid-off cards are immediately reused without a budget change.
The CFPB warns that taking new debt to pay old debt may only move the problem when spending continues to exceed income. A home-equity option can offer a lower rate but puts the home at foreclosure risk and may add closing costs.
Scams and debt settlement confusion
Verify the lender or counselor identity, state availability, written disclosures, and payment method. Never send cryptocurrency, gift cards, or a wire payment to unlock a loan. A legitimate deducted origination fee disclosed when the loan funds is not the same as paying a stranger for a promise.
How this hub stays current
We separate Federal Reserve benchmarks, federal consumer guidance, and provider-specific terms. Lender rates and fees are checked on the provider’s own pages and labeled by date. We do not invent score-based approval odds or publish a universal “best consolidation loan.”
The linked guides divide the decision into rate, eligibility, DTI, fee, and payoff-plan questions. Major benchmark, fee, or regulatory changes trigger review of the affected guide and this hub.
