Personal Loan Lender Reviews 2026: Compare Offers

Primary-source guidance organized around the decision, not a lender application.

Independent research: NexaLoan is an educational publisher, not a lender or broker. We did not apply for these loans and receive no affiliate commission from the reviewed lenders. Scores measure the public product and disclosure quality on the review date, not approval odds. See our editorial policy, review methodology, and advertising disclosure.

Lender review decision path

Use each lender’s soft rate check, then compare the same amount and term. The winning offer is the final APR, fee, usable proceeds, payment, total of payments, funding conditions, and creditor—not the headline score or rate.

Search-led watchlist: NexFund reviews and “Next Loan” messages

Do not compare this watchlist entry like a scored lender yet. Search demand is now reaching this hub through NexFund reviews and Next Loan reviews. Start with our NexFund Lending review. The reviewed public pages described matching and data-sharing, but did not show a confirmed public APR, fee, amount, term, or legal creditor. That makes it a verification-first decision, not a same-field comparison against Discover, SoFi, or Upstart.

Current independently reviewed lenders and comparisons

Discover: 86/100

Strong no-fee structure, 36- to 84-month terms, and a 24.99% current maximum APR. The $40,000 cap and Direct Pay exclusions can limit fit.

Read the Discover review

Discover vs. Best Egg

Discover usually wins on no-fee clarity. Best Egg matters mainly above $40,000 or when its fee-adjusted offer still wins.

Compare Discover and Best Egg

SoFi: 83/100

Broad 2- to 7-year terms, loans up to $100,000, co-borrowers, and Direct Pay. Optional fees and conditional discounts require careful offer math.

Read the SoFi review

Discover vs. SoFi

Discover usually wins on no-fee simplicity. SoFi matters when the borrower needs more than $40,000, a co-borrower, or more flexible Direct Pay workflow.

Compare Discover and SoFi

Discover vs. Upstart

Discover is the cleaner first quote from $2,500 to $40,000. Upstart matters outside that range or when its final fee-adjusted offer wins.

Compare Discover and Upstart

SoFi vs. Upgrade

SoFi usually wins on no-fee upside, larger amounts, and cleaner fee posture. Upgrade matters below $5,000, at 24 months, or when the later hard-pull boundary is decisive.

Compare SoFi and Upgrade

SoFi vs. LendingClub

SoFi usually wins on cleaner fee posture and larger amounts. Happen, formerly LendingClub, matters below $5,000, at 84 months, or when the later hard-pull boundary is decisive.

Compare SoFi and Happen

SoFi vs. Upstart

SoFi is the stronger first quote for most borrowers. Upstart matters mainly below $5,000 or when its final 3- or 5-year fee-adjusted offer wins.

Compare SoFi and Upstart

Upstart: 72/100

Low $1,000 minimum and soft rate checking, but only 3- or 5-year terms, possible deducted fees, a 35.99% maximum APR, and partner-lender variation.

Read the Upstart review

Upstart vs. Upgrade

Upgrade usually wins on term flexibility, joint applications, and debt payoff. Upstart matters mainly above $50,000 or when its 3- or 5-year offer wins after fee-adjusted math.

Compare Upstart and Upgrade

Upstart vs. LendingClub

Happen Bank usually wins on terms, joint applications, Direct Pay, and the later hard-pull boundary. Upstart matters only if its final 3- or 5-year offer clearly wins after fee-adjusted math.

Compare Upstart and Happen

Happen: 82/100

Wide 24- to 84-month terms, loans up to $75,000, soft rate checking, and optional creditor payment. Fees and rate differences still need close review.

Read the Happen review

LendingClub vs. Prosper

Happen, formerly LendingClub, leads on public amount range, fee floor, term flexibility, Direct Pay, and hard-pull timing. The lower fee-adjusted personalized offer still decides.

Compare Happen and Prosper

Upgrade: 79/100

Broad terms, low minimum borrowing, soft rate checking, and creditor payment support. Joint applications work, but the current checking bonus excludes them and a deducted origination fee can reduce usable cash.

Read the Upgrade review

Avant vs. Upgrade

Upgrade leads on flexibility and Direct Pay. Avant matters only if its same-term disclosure wins.

Compare Avant and Upgrade

Best Egg: 74/100

Soft rate checking and clear ranges support comparison. The 35.99% maximum APR and origination fee of up to 9.99% can materially raise total cost.

Read the Best Egg review

Best Egg vs. Upgrade

Upgrade usually wins on flexibility. Best Egg matters only if its lower fee-adjusted same-term offer truly wins.

Compare Best Egg and Upgrade

LightStream: 84/100

No lender fees, fixed purpose-based pricing, amounts up to $100,000, and broad terms support strong-credit borrowers. The application itself requires a hard inquiry.

Read the LightStream review

LightStream vs. Discover

Discover is the easier first quote. LightStream matters above $40,000 or when a strong-credit borrower wants same-day funding potential.

Compare LightStream and Discover

SoFi vs. LightStream

Use this comparison when the real decision is soft-quote flexibility and Direct Pay versus a strong-credit, no-fee structure with an immediate hard inquiry.

Compare SoFi and LightStream

PenFed vs. Navy Federal

PenFed has broader membership access and a soft rate check. Navy Federal offers a wider stated amount range to borrowers who qualify for membership.

Compare the two credit unions

Prosper: 78/100

Terms from 2 to 6 years and joint applications support comparison. The marketplace model and an origination fee up to 9.99% require careful proceeds and funding checks.

Read the Prosper review

Prosper vs. Happy Money

Happy Money leads for card payoff above $5,000. Prosper wins for smaller amounts or co-borrowers.

Compare Prosper and Happy Money

Avant: 70/100

A soft initial rate check and clear WebBank identity help comparison. The 35.99% APR ceiling and administration fee up to 9.99% can make an offer expensive.

Read the Avant review

Happy Money: 76/100

The debt-payoff focus, soft initial rate check, and current rates-page disclosures are useful. The partner lender, deducted origination fee, and Direct Card Payoff timing still decide whether the offer works.

Why the watchlist stays outside the scored table

NexFund Lending is still outside the scored lender table. Its public pages describe matching and data-sharing, but we still could not confirm a clear public APR range, fee range, amount range, term range, or the actual creditor from the reviewed pages. If your search starts with an unexpected loan text or “Next Loan” message, use our NexFund Lending review before replying, clicking, or sharing personal data.

These are public ranges checked July 22, 2026, not personalized quotes. State restrictions and lender-specific underwriting can change the amount, term, fee, and APR available. Track broader market evidence in our personal loan rate guide.

Happy Money needs one extra caution: its current rates page now shows an 8.95%-35.99% range, while some newer public calculator and article footers still show an older January 21, 2026 floor of 7.95%. For comparisons, use the current rates page and the signed disclosure rather than an older footer.

Why Discover currently scores highest

Discover’s no-fee policy removes the common gap between the face amount and usable proceeds. Its current 24.99% maximum APR is also below the public maximums shown by SoFi and Upstart. It loses points for its $40,000 maximum, income floor, state restrictions, and Direct Pay limits after Discover became a division of Capital One, N.A.

A higher score does not mean Discover is automatically cheaper. Compare final Truth in Lending disclosures using the loan calculator.

When SoFi may be the stronger fit

SoFi may fit larger needs because its public maximum reaches $100,000. It also provides six standard terms, supports co-borrowers, and offers Direct Pay. Those features can matter more than the headline score when an applicant needs over $40,000 or a specific repayment length.

The public rate range assumes listed discounts, and an optional origination fee of up to 7% can reduce usable proceeds. Compare a no-fee version with any fee-bearing lower-rate offer.

When Upstart may be worth checking

Upstart’s $1,000 minimum can better match a small need than SoFi’s $5,000 minimum, and its soft rate check lets an applicant inspect conditional pricing before the hard inquiry stage. However, the public product has only 3- and 5-year terms, and a deducted fee can create a funding shortfall.

Upstart is a platform rather than the lender, so identify the originating bank, fee, and net proceeds on the final disclosure instead of inferring easier approval from marketing language.

Where Happen, Upgrade, and Best Egg differ

Happen and Upgrade provide broader published term ranges than Best Egg’s 36 to 60 months. All three allow an initial soft rate check, but their fee structures and creditor-payment features differ. Compare net proceeds and total payments from the actual offer.

Where Prosper, Avant, and Happy Money differ

Prosper supports joint applications and a wider term range, Avant emphasizes WebBank-backed speed, and Happy Money is built around debt payoff through partner lenders. All three can deduct an upfront fee. Compare the legal creditor, usable proceeds, hard-inquiry point, and payoff workflow before accepting.

Happy Money’s main distinction is operational: Direct Card Payoff normally processes within four banking days, and a canceled loan can still leave the borrower with 30 days to return funds if card payments cannot be reversed. Compare the payoff workflow against the borrower’s due dates and cleanup risk, not APR alone.

Compare identical loan scenarios

  1. Use one exact amount based on a verified expense or creditor payoff.
  2. Choose the same or closest realistic term at each lender.
  3. Record APR, interest rate, origination-fee dollars, and usable proceeds.
  4. Record monthly payment, finance charge, and total of payments.
  5. Mark every discount condition and whether it can be removed later.
  6. Confirm the soft-to-hard credit-inquiry point before continuing.
  7. Identify the legal creditor and any Direct Pay restriction.
  8. Accept only after verification and funding conditions are clear.

Our personal loan comparison guide explains how to build a shortlist without treating an advertised floor as generally available. How the 100-point scores work

Each review assigns up to 30 points for cost and total repayment, 20 for eligibility and transparency, 15 for terms and flexibility, 15 for application and credit impact, 10 for consumer protection and support, and 10 for availability and accessibility. Missing, inconsistent, or purely conditional disclosures lose points.

Scores are recalculated when a material rate, fee, term, lender-identity, eligibility, or servicing disclosure changes. We do not enter invented borrower data to produce a favorable offer and do not use affiliate payouts as a scoring category.

What this hub does not claim

No universal winner: An 86/100 product can still be unaffordable at its high end, while a lower-scoring product can produce a better individual disclosure. We do not claim guaranteed approval, a guaranteed rate, or firsthand borrowing experience.

Customer reviews can describe service experiences but cannot establish an applicant’s future rate or approval. This hub prioritizes current primary-source terms and reproducible cost fields.

Review updates and release controls

Every linked review records a fact-check date and cites the lender’s current product, fee, application, and servicing disclosures. A material change to APR, fees, available amounts, terms, lender identity, credit-inquiry timing, or funding rules triggers a source recheck and score review. A changed marketing headline alone does not automatically change the score; the underlying disclosure must support it.

New lender reviews are added only after the article passes word-count, source, internal-link, advertising, duplicate-text, and exact canonical checks. Unfinished reviews remain outside the public sitemap and are not linked from this hub.
